While this may be a tired refrain, representation matters. We're often glued to the couch during this platinum age of television, but American Latino viewers are rarely reflected on screen, particularly on streaming service Netflix. Sure, there is Narcos, Casa de Las Flores, and Always a Witch — all Netflix originals set in other countries — but the stories of United States-born families...
Good article. Really disappointed that Netflix cancelled ODAAT: such a smart, funny show, full of heart. Hope it gets picked up by a smarter network.
I’m still not over One Day At a Time being canceled. #SaveODAAT. This article was really good at getting to the heart of why there was so much of a backlash of canceling this show. I absolutely love this quote “an egregious erasure of Latinos at a time when anti-Latino rhetoric floods our political discourse, and it’s a reminder of Netflix’s tepid support for our stories, just when we need them the most.”
Thank you for this coverage! Yet another reminder that too often “ethnic” shows are so often subject to different standards. Citing low viewership numbers, without releasing actual viewer numbers nor releasing how much effort and money they put into promoting it is hiding behind a smokescreen of pretending to actually value diversity. I’d love to see how much effort Netflix spends on promoting something like ODAAT compared to Fuller House or BirdBox.#saveODAAT.
Really good point! I think it would also be interesting to see a breakdown of marketing dollars spent on less “wholesome” shows like Narcos.
