Listen to today's episode on what Shaun thinks is the single most underrated civil rights issue of our time. It's the local budget of your city and county and how much of it is going to law enforcement. Did you know that the LAPD takes up over 50% of the whole Los Angeles General Fund? It's outrageous. And we have to fight back to make these budgets actually reflect what we need.
Budgets are a reflection of values.
Every year, the United States national budget is released. Under the Trump administration, funding for education and environmental efforts continues to be cut while funds for border security and America’s ever-increasing military continues to increase. Where the administration puts this money is a direct reflection of its beliefs. Trump’s vision of a country with more military-grade weapons and fewer immigrants is funded by trillions of tax dollars.
Every city in America also has a budget, its own sum of money that reflects its own values and needs. This is the money that is used to provide school children with books and meals, build public housing, fund libraries, pay sanitation workers that keep the city clean, and so many other essential community services. Yet, in many cities across the country, that money is going to all the wrong places.
In today’s episode, Shaun breaks down the gross misuse of tax money in the newly proposed city budget of Los Angeles, the importance of knowing your own city budget and what steps you can take to ensure you have a say in where that money goes.
