The United States is the single most racialized, colorized nation in the history of the world. It was created by white people – and for the power and advancement of white people. And while the slice of white America who didn’t vote for Donald Trump may often think of themselves to be anti-racist and anti-white supremacy – the reality of where white America falls is far short of that.
White people protect white power. Sometimes it’s ugly and overt – like taking over the United States Capitol in a fit of racist rage. Other times its ugly and covert – like white domestic terrorism just not being taken seriously on any credible level on the city, county, state and federal level of our government.
And so here we are – a week after the worst attack on the United States Capitol since the War of 1812 – and our nation has hardly even mobilized in any significant way to prevent something like this from ever happening again – and there is one primary reason why.
White power has never been able to regulate and check itself.
I thought about creating a long list right here of all of the racist mass murders and shootings and attacks that have happened in our country over the past few years at churches, mosques, synagogues and Walmarts, but I’m sure most of you already know. You know that the single biggest threat to America’s national security is angry, offended white people. That’s been common knowledge for years now.
But what I’ve come to really understand is this – America’s white power structure – be it conservative or liberal – has always been willing to mobilize itself against African Americans and Latinos here in the United States, and against Muslims around the world – all in the name of law, order, safety and security.
However not even a tiny fraction of that mobilization has ever been made to check, contain or interrupt white power. That’s not a partisan reality, but a racial one. The systems and structures that needed to be imagined, funded and deployed to interrupt white power, and all of its many threats, are not even in their infancy. Most of the positions of power where those systems would be developed are almost exclusively managed by people that benefit by keeping things the way they are now.
And America’s chickens are coming home to roost in the ugliest of ways as a result.
