The Grassroots Law Project has just filed a petition for a new prosecutor to be appointed in the murder of Breonna Taylor, the young medical first responder who was shot and killed by police  earlier this year while sleeping in her home.

Let me break down exactly what this means, and the effect we hope it will have.

In Kentucky, where Breonna was killed, there is something called the Office of the Prosecutor’s Advisory Council. It’s a fully functioning office within the state government made up of nine people, eight of which are appointed by the governor. The ninth member is Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who has grossly mishandled the Breonna Taylor case from the moment it was given to him.

Kentucky’s current governor is Democrat Andy Beshear. He’s a good man, a good leader and I have a lot of respect for him. He has expressed his deep disturbance by the murder of Breonna Taylor and wants to do something about it.

Here’s what he can do.

If residents of Kentucky have been criminally wronged and the prosecutor assigned to their case refuses to address this wrong, they can present their case to the Office of the Prosecutor’s Advisory Council. This is a powerful tool that most states don’t have.

Cameron, who is not only friends with Donald Trump, but as well as a friend and former employee of deeply problematic and destructive Senator Mitch McConnell, never tried a case in court until Breonna Taylor’s case. He handled the case about as poorly as anyone could.

He refused to charge the two officers who shot and killed Breonna, opting to only charge the officer who shot the wall. According to grand jurors he was tasked with informing, he didn’t even give them the option to hold these officers accountable.

In partnership with Breonna family, their attorneys, the Louisville Urban League and the Grassroots Law Project, we filed a legal brief with the Office of the Prosecutors Advisory Council. We are showing them the gross legal misconduct by Cameron in order to have a new prosecutor assigned to the case.

On today’s episode of The Breakdown, Shaun unpacks and explains this game-changing petition and what comes next in the fight for police accountability.
