Protests Erupt in Rio de Janeiro Over Police Shooting of 8-Year-Old Girl

Brazil’s favelas continue to be a site of contestation between residents and police. This battleground, sadly, does not exclude children. This year alone, more than five children have been killed in the government’s war on gangs. The militarization of the police coupled with their “shoot first” policy is having a horrific impact on the nation’s most vulnerable population.
