A jury of 11 white jurors and one Black juror were selected to decide the fate of Gregory and Travis McMichael and William 'Roddie' Bryan. The bias writes itself
Yesterday, the jury for the murder trial of Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William ‘Roddie’ Bryan in the February 2020 shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery was selected. Astonishingly, the jury is comprised of 11 white jurors and 1 Black juror in a county (Glynn County) where roughly 1 in 3 residents are Black. The approved selection was so egregiously biased that the presiding judge, Timothy Walmsley, said out loud that the selection process appeared to show intentional discrimination.
No shit.
Nevertheless, Judge Walmsley allowed the ruling to stand and basically said that it was out of the court’s power to reverse a jury selection that both the prosecution and defense approved. After two and a half weeks of the defense removing potential Black jurors from the selection pool, because of race, both sides of the trial landed on an overwhelmingly majority-white jury being fair, and presumably not at all able to be influenced by the racial overtones of the case.
