Why you should consider becoming a subscriber to The North Star today
Nearly 4 years after we first launched, we are still fully independent, and speaking truth to power like no other platform in America, but we simply cannot do it without YOUR help!
Hello My Friend,
4 years ago, after a career as the Senior Justice Writer at the New York Daily News and The Intercept, I made the risky decision to break out on my own to build and launch The North Star so that I could focus my entire life as a journalist and activist on social and racial justice. And over the past 4 years we’ve released nearly 1,000 podcast episodes and 3,000 articles and essays that simply would not have been published without us. My podcast, The Breakdown, has received tens of millions of listens since we launched - the most of any racial justice podcast in the world. But now, in the shadows of the protests of 2020, what looked like a renaissance of racial justice reporting is actually disappearing by the day.
But I am still here. And The North Star is still here. But just as other outlets have been decimated or shut down altogether, we simply cannot continue this work without you. Let me please remind you of something important…
We aren’t funded by venture capitalists, investors, or corporations.
We are 100% funded by our subscribers - who are just hardworking everyday people just like you. If you are receiving this message and you aren’t a subscriber, could you PLEASE become a subscriber today?
The truth is this - if you follow me on social media, if you listen to my podcast, or benefit from my work or leadership in any way, it’s because of the work I do at The North Star that any of that is even possible. I think that people see how many followers I have across social media and assume that we have more subscribers and supporters than we actually do. Right now, we need at least 5,000 new or renewing people to become subscribers for us to even be able to continue our work. Without them, I am not sure how we can move forward, honestly. I want to say this very plainly…
If we don’t get more subscribers to purchase monthly or annual memberships, we will have to end my podcast and shut down The North Star altogether.
We have always paid our staff a living wage and offered full benefits, but painful cutbacks have forced us to let so many essential employees go. I want to be able to bring those staffers back on full-time so that we can do what we do! I want to be able to keep the staff we have. And I want to be able to recruit new writers, researchers, editors, and journalists to join our team. We can ONLY do that if you are a subscriber. We don’t have any magic money coming from anywhere else. We live and die by the support of people just like yourself.
If you are already a member, and want to gift a subscription to someone else, you can do that here.
Now I am going to shoot straight with you. You are about to see me asking and asking and asking until we at least hit our goal of 5,000 new members - people’s jobs depend on it. I am going to be asking here every day of the week. I am going to be asking on social media every single day of the week. I am going to be asking on my podcast on every single episode. It means that much to me.
Could you please join today and get us at least one subscriber closer to our goal?
I am so grateful for your love, encouragement, and support.
