Twitter Praises Maxine Waters’ Handling of Mnuchin Hearing

During a hearing on Tuesday, April 9, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Financial Services Chair Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) traded barbs about the Democrats’ request to disclose President Donald Trump’s tax returns. Things did not go well for the administration’s official.

Mnuchin, sitting for a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, attempted to delay the House’s request to turn over six years worth of President Trump’s tax returns. He said Trump’s legal team is still reviewing the request. While attempting to leave for "an important meeting," Mnuchin promised that he would not return to the House if Waters asked. “I will cancel my meeting and I will not be back,” he said, “I will be very clear if that’s the way you’d like to have this relationship.”

But much to Mnuchin’s surprise, Waters did not present any opposition to his offer. “Thank you. The secretary has agreed to stay to hear all the rest of the members,” she said. “Please cancel your meeting and respect our time.”Befuddled, Mnuchin tried to backpedal from his offer, saying “you’re instructing me to stay here and I should cancel.” But Waters replied, “No, you made me an offer.”

The kerfuffle went on for minutes, arguing whether he made an offer or not. “I did not make you an offer; let’s be clear. You’re instructing me, you’re ordering me to stay here,” an irritated Mnuchin fought back. In response, Waters said he could leave at any time, but Mnuchin kept dragging on the discussion. “Please dismiss everybody. I believe you’re supposed to take the gavel and bang it,” he said.Waters retorted, “Please do not instruct me as to how I am to conduct this committee.”

Writers and social media users were quick to bring back memories of her rise to stardom as “Auntie Maxine” during a House Financial Services Committee hearing in 2017, which also involved Mnuchin. When the congresswoman asked him about why his office did not respond to her request regarding Trump’s alleged financial ties with Russian banks, he tried to avert the question by complimenting Waters, Vox reported. She tried to redirect him by stating that she was “reclaiming my time.”

“We don’t want to take my time up with how great I am,” Waters told the secretary. When he said he was attempting to answer the question, the congresswoman immediately repeated the same phrase, which caught fire on the internet.

“Steve Mnuchin learns the hard way that you do not rush Committee Chairwoman Auntie Maxine,” The Daily Show tweeted on Thursday. Other Twitter users offered context to the exchange.

"Prequel: Here is more video of Auntie Maxine leading up to the other video above, scaring the daylights out of Steve Mnuchin who can't figure out if he should leave and who tries to tell her what to do every time he gets more scared. EPIC,” user Amee Vanderpool wrote on April 9.

“When will people learn that Auntie Maxine always has the time to teach [sic]” The View co-host Sunny Hostin tweeted. Former Star Trek star George Takei asked a similar question: “Haven't they learned yet not to come for Auntie Maxine? “
