Three Reasons Why Trump’s Second Impeachment Is Actually Important

There’s a lot going on in the United States.

Let me be blunt, this country is currently a shitshow, which is saying a lot considering it’s pretty much always a shitshow.

A few days ago, we set the single-day record for the most Coronavirus deaths with a reported 4,197 lives lost. While the rest of the world distributes vaccines and is moving towards getting this pandemic under control, our administration’s wildly inadequate response is still proving detrimental.

Despite only being two weeks into the new year, we’ve already had a domestic terrorist attack against the US Capitol, the Coronavirus pandemic has grown more deadly than ever and our nation’s president has been impeached for a historic second time.

There is so much going on, so much chaos and tragedy that giving any attention to Donald Trump seems a waste of time and energy. He has dominated headlines and news cycles for the past four years. Many people are fed up with the mere sound of his name, myself included, and see no use in impeaching a president who’s already on his way out.

But we must continue pushing for his impeachment. Here are three reasons why.

  1. A full impeachment by the House and Senate with a simple additional 2/3rds majority vote would ban Trump from ever running for office again. That’s a level of peace of mind I think we all need.

  2. If the Senate votes to remove him from office, he will lose his $ 200,000-lifetime pension. I’ll be glad to know that not a cent of my tax dollars will go to this man.

  3. It sets a precedent that Trump’s actions are intolerable. While according to House Democrats, this second impeachment is on the grounds of “inciting violence against the Government of the United States”, Trump has committed a multitude of atrocious actions leading up to this moment.

All of these reasons are vital to the future of this country. Over the past four years of the Trump administration, my faith in any sort of accountability within our government has diminished greatly. Trump’s full impeachment, as literal meaning as it holds, would also be greatly symbolic.

It’s a step in the right direction, one we desperately need to take.
