This is a literal-crying shame, but please explain why the adults seem to be well fed while helping these poor children. Something is not right. I wish I had the resources to be there because I would make sure I shared some of my food with the starving children. Am I missing something?
You are missing the fact that children require more metabolizable energy (ME) than adults do, because they have a higher metabolic rate and their body is trying to grow. Juvenile mammals always require more ME than adults require for maintenance. This is nutrition science 101.
