Common misconceptions about the USS Liberty attack:
1. The attack didn't last for 2 hours. The planes didn't strafe the ship for "an hour and a half". According to the Liberty's logs and the testimony of the crew, the first shots were fired at about 1400 hrs. About one hour later, the IDF boats signaled offers of assistance with no further attack.
2. This ONE HOUR time period includes the part where the IDF boats initially approached the Liberty flashing signals requesting ID, and the Liberty's gun mounts OPENED FIRE on them in response, fairly-well turning their hulls into swiss cheese. This comes directly from the sworn testimony of Commanding Officer, William McGonagle, and it's a significant part of the narrative that conspiracy theorists fail to mention every time they speak on this incident.
3. The IDF helos which approached the Liberty after the boats retired to shore were not filled with armed gunmen or soldiers intent on "finishing off" the crew. They were rescue helos, and one of them included a US Naval Attache who dropped a note down to the Liberty asking if there were wounded on board who required medical assistance. Since the ship's listing precluded a proper landing on deck, they, too, eventually retired toward to shore. In fact, the recordings of the Helo pilots conversations with their air controllers indicate their continued confusion as to the ship's identity, with instructions issued to the pilots as to the disposition of the crew, "...if they're Egyprian".
4. Neither Johnson nor McNamera ordered the rescue flights recalled while the Liberty was still under attack. In fact, at the time of the attack, the nearest US carrier was hundreds of miles away, rendereing an intervention impossible. By the time any flight of US planes were dispatched, the attack on the Liberty was over. And, in fact, the recall order was issued by Sixth Fleet's Vice Admiral Martin at about 1630, well after the IDF boats departed the scene.
5. Many of the Liberty's crew publicly spoke of the incident in the days that followed it, and none were ever punished with imprisonment "or worse". Some even wrote home about it.
