The Breakdown with Shaun King: Today we are launching the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission

The system is not broken.
This thing many refer to as the American justice system is not broken. It is working perfectly for those who built it: the white men who built it on the backs of immigrants and enslaved Africans. This system was built with divine attention to detail. Nothing was created by accident. This system was built to enforce the legacy of slavery, to oppress people of color and to ensure dominance forever belongs to the rich, powerful and white.
They call it the justice system but never specified who the justice belonged to.
In order to bring about real justice reform, we must tear down the entire establishment and build something new. That is why Shaun and his diverse team of revolutionary organizers are building the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission (or TJRC for short) to review cases of racial inequities, police violence and misconduct in the legal system. It is inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation commission implemented by the post-apartheid South African government, whose mission was to heal the deeply divided nation by recognizing the injustices faced by native South Africans. The only thing the original commission lacked was true consequences for those who perpetrated the egregious injustices.
Shaun and his team believe that in order for America to move forward and implement long-lasting change in this country, justice must be an essential part of the commission. That is why they have teamed up with district attorneys in TJRC’s launch cities of Boston, Philidelphia, and San Francisco. These courageous and compassionate DA’s — Rachael Rollins, Larry Krasner, and Chesa Boudin — are ones we have helped to elect.
City by city, family by family, injustice by injustice, cases that have been disregarded and swept under the run will be brought before them. They have the power to bring to light stories of injustice from recent years or decades ago in order to give these people the care, closure, and healing they deserve.
This is the next step people have been asking for. This is what goes beyond petitions, hashtags, and social media posts. This is how we begin tearing apart the oppressive systems that exist in America and start building new ones that protect and serve all people.
This is what we have been waiting for.
In today’s episode of The Breakdown, Shaun formally introduces the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission to the world as he leads us all into this new phase of the revolution
