Election Day is just 20 days away.

For many, their fears surrounding it continue to grow, and I understand completely.

There has been so much chaos surrounding the act of voting. Voter suppression wreaking havoc across the country, Trump’s attempt to deter mail-in voting and the insistence from him and his administration that the entire election is illegitimate are just a few of the worries.

Then, there is the fear of what will happen after the results are announced.

Trump will either win or lose, but the outcomes are actually far more complicated. On multiple occasions, Trump has made strange and frightening statements alluding to the possibility that even if he were to lose the election, he would not leave office. While the idea of such an action may seem impossible, many believed his winning in the first place was impossible.

If this year has taught us anything, it’s to not rule anything out.

2020 has been a hard year to say the least. It’s been full of loss, grief, anger, confusion and disappointment on so many fronts. Remaining encouraged despite everything is just about the toughest thing you can do. It’s much easier to get swept up in the whirlwind of what all else could go wrong.

But I’ve always been an optimist. Despite the nature of my work, or maybe even because of it, I try to look for the good in every situation, the thing that I can hold onto and draw hope from.

I want to give us all something positive to hold onto during the election.

The one thing that could end all conversations of result contention is if Joe Biden wins by a landslide. This may sound ridiculous, but with the immense amount of pressure that has been put on this election, voter turnout is expected to surge this year. It would take a lot of votes from both the general population as well as the electoral college, but it is very possible.

On today’s episode of The Breakdown, Shaun unpacks and explains why all of our election fears are valid, and gives us something positive to hold onto.
