The only positive change we’ve ever gotten in this country is when we fought like hell for it.

The way the political systems in this country are set up make affecting change damn near impossible. They’re designed to keep things the way they are. That being said, it would be a grave mistake for any of us to assume that the Biden-Harris administration is going to enact the changes America is in desperate need of.

Make no mistake, I am THRILLED that Trump ––an immoral, bigoted, white supremacist ––will soon be out of office.

When the race was officially called across different news sources, my Brooklyn neighborhood erupted in celebration. It was a gorgeous sunny day and people went out on their stoops to cheer and laugh and rejoice. People were literally blasting “We Are the Champions” from their fire escapes. The excitement and relief was palpable, my own included. It was as if we’d just overthrown our dictator.

But at the back of my mind, and in the minds of many, I kept thinking about how the fight is far from over.

The struggle against police brutality and racial violence has been going on for decades, long before Trump was in office. America’s immigration and refugee system, while gutted by the current administration, was never adequate and left room for so much abuse. Mass incarceration, climate change, LGBTQ+ rights and so many other pressing issues will not be magically resolved by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

So yes, let’s celebrate their victory, but let’s also begin holding them both accountable for the changes we want to see.

They are inheriting a country that continues to be ravaged by the coronavirus and whose economy has plummeted. They will have so much work to do, they could easily use this as an excuse to push all other issues to the side.

We have to show them that this is not an option.

We have to show them that we are watching and waiting.

We have to give them a precise plan for what comes next, and that’s exactly what my team at the Grassroots Law Project and I are working on.

We are releasing this plan tomorrow. It doesn’t need a congressional majority. It doesn’t alienate any of their voters. It is comprehensive, impactful and needs your support to ensure they follow it.

On today’s episode of The Breakdown, I begin to introduce this plan and why it is needed right now more than ever.
