We are at a critical moment in the history of the United States.

The House is controlled by Democrats, while the Senate and presidency are controlled by Republicans. Because of this split, there is a constant grab for power within the national government. Every decision being made is an opportunity for either party to establish their control.

The fight going on right now is whether or not President Trump will get to appoint a new Supreme Court justice.

As I’ve said before, and expand upon in my book “Make Change,” Barack Obama was not a radical president. His humanity was radical. His being a Black man with a Black wife and children was radical, but for the most part, his policies were not. The changes he did fight for were blocked by Republicans every step of the way, all the way up until his final days in office.

When Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away in 2016, Obama had the constitutional power to appoint his successor. Instead, Republicans refused to cooperate with his nomination and the decision was left to his successor Donald Trump. Republicans effectively stole this nomination from Obama.

Out of the nine justices that make up the Supreme Court, Trump has appointed two. With the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, he may get to appoint a third. This will further shift the political makeup of the court to a more conservative group.

Not only has Trump stacked the Supreme Court with conservatives, but according to a White House briefing, he has appointed an unprecedented number of judges across the judicial system.

Trump has confirmed 158 judicial nominees to the federal bench. Approximately 1 out of every 4 active judges on the United States Courts of Appeals have been appointed by him. Trump has also had more circuit judges confirmed at this point in his presidency than any president in recent history.

Each of these judges holds a huge amount of power. They contribute to the American justice system that continues to disproportionately punish and oppress Black and Brown people.

Donald Trump has dominated the judicial system in a way no president has ever before.

On today’s episode, Shaun breaks down what Democrats must do in order to take back control from the Republicans who are dominating our government.
