Norway’s Betrayal: Financial Support for Israel’s Occupation
Norway’s position on Palestine is a textbook example of contradiction. The government publicly condemns Israel’s genocide in Gaza, but behind the scenes, its Pension Fund is pumping billions into Israel’s economy—directly funding the companies that profit from the occupation. This hypocrisy is both shocking and dangerous.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, recently highlighted the gap between Norway’s public stance and its financial actions. Norway’s Pension Fund—the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund—has increased its investments in Israeli companies by 32%, totaling $1.9 billion by 2023. By the end of 2024, 6.9% of the fund’s total value, $121.5 billion, will be invested in companies tied to Israel’s economy of occupation.
The Financial Hypocrisy: Norway’s Investment in Israel’s War Machine
Norway’s Pension Fund claims to have the “world’s most comprehensive ethical guidelines”—but its investments in Israel completely contradict this claim. Norway continues to fund companies that profit from the occupation, despite the fact that Israel’s actions in Gaza are direct violations of international law.
While Norway publicly condemns Israel’s actions in Gaza, it continues to invest in companies that build illegal settlements, construct apartheid walls, and supply military equipment used to oppress Palestinians. Norway’s government has effectively given a pass to companies that are complicit in war crimes by allowing its wealth fund to support them.
The Failure of Norway’s Ethical Council
The Ethical Council that oversees the Norwegian Pension Fund was supposed to ensure that investments align with Norway’s ethical guidelines. But it has failed miserably in preventing investments in companies actively supporting Israel’s apartheid system. This failure raises serious questions about the credibility of Norway’s supposed ethical standards.
As Francesca Albanese points out, Norway’s financial investments in Israel may even trigger legal liability given the international crimes involved. By continuing to invest in these companies, Norway has chosen to prioritize financial gain over human rights and international law.
The Legal and Moral Implications
The Geneva Conventions clearly prohibit investments that fund companies involved in war crimes, genocide, and occupations. By continuing to support Israeli companies profiting from the occupation of Palestine, Norway is in violation of international law.
What is more disturbing is the silent complicity of Norway’s government in this ongoing issue. While the Norwegian people support the Palestinian cause, the government’s financial actions betray those values. If Norway truly wanted to show solidarity with Palestine, it would stop funding companies that profit from the oppression of Palestinians.
The International Hypocrisy: Norway’s Role in the Global System of Complicity
Norway’s financial support for Israel is not just a national problem—it is a global issue. By continuing to fund the occupation, Norway is participating in a system of complicity that extends to other countries and financial institutions, including the United States and European Union. The silence surrounding these investments highlights a broader failure to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes.
We have seen this pattern before—financial institutions and governments continue to support Israel, despite its blatant violations of international law. It’s time for real change in Norway’s policies and for the world to stop enabling Israel’s genocide.
A Call for Change and Accountability
Norway’s continued investments in Israeli companies that are directly involved in the occupation of Palestine is a betrayal of Palestinian rights and international law. Norway must stop funding Israel’s war machine and align its financial policies with its moral commitments.
It’s time for global solidarity with Palestine, and for Norway to lead the charge in ending its complicity with Israel. The Palestinian cause is the moral cause, and it’s time for governments like Norway’s to make the right choice.
