New Definitions: Redefining America Through Verse | Volume Six [Defining Reflection]

New Definitions is a poetry series curated by The North Star that seeks to redefine common terms from a socio-political lens. These “new definitions” will give proper context to what America is and what it has the potential to become, for better or worse.

Defining Reflection

reflection – ri-ˈflek-shən (noun)

the production of an image by or as if by a mirror.

…or as if by an action,
as if by your furor
producing in my thoughts
the image of my ancestor’s horror
as if I could ever envision
a cowardly bison
dressed as a cowardly mourner
of a cowardly failure

reflection –

a fixing of the thoughts on something; careful consideration.

after mindful observation,
the source of your frustration
cares the same about me
as he cares about your situation,
opposed to your thoughts,
if you need,
I will bring food to your table
what can he bring?
what will he bring?
not a damn thing, not a damn thing.
