Members of Congress and Civil Rights Organizations Demand Stephen Miller Resign

Civil rights organizations and many others are calling for White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller to resign after a recent report uncovered emails of him exchanging links to white nationalist websites with a Breibart editor.

The emails, which were published by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch on Tuesday, were sent by Miller to a Breibart editor in 2015 and 2016. In the messages sent to the editor, it shows Miller exchanging white-nationalist ideas and website links with former Breitbart editor Kaite McHugh.

The messages, over 900 emails, show the ideology behind some of the policies set during President Donald Trump’s presidency.

Quick Facts about Stephen Miller and the emails

  • Trump announced in December 2016 that Miller, who served as a senior policy advisor during his campaign, would serve as a White House senior adviser. Miller also worked for former U.S Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a policy advisor in 2009.

  • On October 23, 2015, Miller sent a story from the white nationalist website VDARE to McHugh, according to the report. The website, which was founded by Peter Brimelow in 1999, discusses the anti-immigrant movement, as well as “regularly publishes articles by prominent white nationalists, race scientists and anti-Semites.”

  • In an email chain beginning on September 1, 2015, Miller recommended that Breitbart write about The Camp of Saints,” which is a racist French novel about a fictional invasion that “characterizes non-whites as horrific and uncivilized ‘monsters,’” according to the SPLC. Miller suggested McHugh and Breitbart editor Julia Hahn tie it into their story about “a series of stories on [non-white SAT scores] to break it down,” according to the SPLC report.

  • Miller was reportedly upset after Amazon and other retailers stopped selling the Confederate flags on their websites following the shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in June 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina, which left nine Black churchgoers dead. In one email, Miller writes: “Have you thought about going to Amazon and finding the commie flags and then doing a story on that?” according to the published emails.

  • Miller spoke with anti-Muslim extremist Pamela Gellar, who publishes anti-Mulism content on her blog, “Atlas Shrugs,” according to the SPLC.

  • The senior White House adviser sent McHugh links from Infowars, an anti-government website. The story, which was syndicated from the right-wing website CNSNews.com, was about Reverend Franklin Graham’s comments about ending Muslim immigration, according to the report. Miller reportedly sent McHugh the article to help her with her reporting.

  • Miller talks about President Calvin Coolidge in several emails to Breitbart and about the Immigration Act of 1924, which limits immigration to several parts of the U.S. Hitler has also praised Coolidge’s law in “Mein Kampf,” stating that it was a model for the Nazis in Germany, according to the report.

What They’re Saying Many organizations and politicians have called for Miller’s resignation following the report. In a joint statement, the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released a joint statement on Thursday demanding that Miller step down.

“It’s clearer than ever that Stephen Miller is a far-right white nationalist with a racist and xenophobic worldview. His beliefs are appalling, indefensible, and completely at odds with public service,” the statement read. “As documented by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Stephen Miller has embedded himself in white nationalist doctrine for years, including promoting racist propaganda from fringe sites like VDARE and InfoWars. And as the chief architect of the Muslim Ban and cruel family separation policies, Stephen Miller has spent the last three years turning his bigotry into policy — with President Trump’s blessing.”

“Stephen Miller is a white nationalist and he has no business serving in the White House,” they added. “As leaders in the Democratic Caucus, representing diverse constituencies who have been targeted by Stephen Miller’s hateful beliefs, we call for his resignation without delay.”

US Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) tweeted on Tuesday: “As I said earlier this year: Stephen Miller is a white nationalist. And now we have the emails to prove it. This type of racism and hatred has no place in our government. Miller needs to step down. Now.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement the emails prove that Miller used his power to push xenophobic and racist ideas during his time as a White House senior adviser. The organization also suggested Trump should fire him if he does not step down.

“We already knew Stephen Miller, the architect of the Muslim Ban and separating immigrant families at the border and caging their children was a white supremacist. Now we have the emails to back up previous perceptions of his racism and xenophobia,” CAIR Director of Government Affairs Robert McCaw said. “Miller must resign immediately. Bigots should have no place in influencing the direction of our nation’s immigration policy. If President Trump has any sense of decency, he should fire Miller if he does not resign.”
