Kuumba (koo–OOM–bah): Creativity
To always do as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
Black folks live the principle of Kuumba practically every day of our American existence, but in 2020 we took it to new heights. From online sensations such as D-Nice’s Club Quarantine and Timbaland and Swizz Beats’s Verzuz battles, to murals commemorating those lost to state-sanctioned violence, Black creativity was at an all-time high.
The spirit of Kuumba has been vital to our resilience. This year, the world was a huge beneficiary of our ingenuity. But what else is new?
