Israeli settlers just lynched an American from Tampa. And it seems like the America First crowd doesn't even care
Do you think anyone in the government is going to pursue his killers? How about the feds? Or maybe the government in Florida will care about one of their own, right? Or can Israelis do anything?
Good Morning and As-Salaam-Alaikum to each of you.
As I write this it’s 2:30AM and I’ve been up trying my best to comfort a family that just lost the most kind, humble, handsome, pious, and loving young man after he was literally beaten to death by Israeli settlers. He wanted to get married. He ran an ice cream shop for a living. What’s wild is I had no idea I knew the family when I posted about him 12 hours earlier.
About 12 hours ago I saw on Twitter/X that a young man from Tampa named Saif Musallet was literally beaten to death by Israeli settlers while Saif was there visiting his family. Let me be overt here: Saif was an American citizen from Tampa. He was killed visiting his Palestinian family in the West Bank.
And when I learned about it, I made that tweet above. And I had NO IDEA in the world that I knew this kid’s family.
For the past 2 years I’ve stayed up until 2am and later so that I could check on my friends in Gaza (who are 7 hours ahead of me) to make sure they survived the night. So, tonight, as everybody in the house slept, I was looking at social media, and I noticed a dear sister named Fatmah, who is cherished in our community, posted that Saif was her family. Even without thinking I knew the family, I already cared that this young man was beaten to death, but in one swift moment it became hyper-personal. I already take grief so personally. I take all of the families I’ve fought for to heart like they are my own family, and in ways, they are.
But here is what really has me fuming right now. This kid was an American citizen. I saw his passport. I know his family. I gave salaams to his father tonight. And as an American, I was taught my entire life, that that meant YOU HAD RIGHTS. Right? Isn’t that what you were taught? That you have rights that belong to you as an American?
Tell me though, what rights does Saif have? In fact, he isn’t even the first American killed in the West Bank this year, or last year, or the year before. It KEEPS HAPPENING and guess what? The United States government doesn’t give a damn about them. I mean nothing. Not from Biden. Not from Trump. Not from Obama. Not from Kamala. None of them did a thing to hold the people who killed AMERICANS accountable. I know because I know the families and have met with them myself.
What’s painfully clear to me is that our rights in America are a mirage. You might have them. You might not. Depends on who you know. Depends on your religion and skin color and zip code. Depends on your last name. Who knows. Maybe you have them today, but maybe not tomorrow. That’s how fragile rights are feeling right now in America.
Because here is what I know. And tell me if I’m lying…
If Becky or Margaret from Colorado got killed IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD AS SAIF, but instead of being killed by Israelis, those white Americans were killed by Palestinians - tell me what you think the response of the government would be!
You already know! Holy hell would reign down like fire on any Palestinian that touched the blonde hair of Becky from Boulder. But when it’s Saif it’s quite literally like it doesn't even matter.
And like that, I am reminded of why we ever said the phrase “Black Lives Matter” because this American government so often treated them like they didn’t matter at all. And now we see that same thing happening again, right here this very moment - such that Palestinian-AMERICANS get killed by Israelis and the United States takes the side of the OTHER COUNTRY.
I swear the people that claim they are America First are not America First. America First would be standing up for the American that just got beaten to death in front of everyone. They aren’t America First. They are Israel First. And you know it.
I actually think liberals and conservatives are both coming to understand this. It almost seems like the Far Right is understanding it even better than the Far Left to be honest, which is wild to witness.
Please pray for Saif and his family. He is a martyr, and that eases the pain some for the family, but it’s impossible to not feel like you just got robbed and your own country couldn’t care less.
