What the video shows

Yesterday’s footage from Jabalia took my breath away. Not a strike, not a block, not “heavy damage.” A city — 120,000+ people — gone. The frame never finds a standing building. Not a home. Not a school. Not a clinic. Nothing but rubble from horizon to horizon. You can feel the silence of it — the absence of life, the pulverized history underfoot.

Say it plainly: Jabalia didn’t “fall.” It was erased.

This was not about hostages or “defeating Hamas”

If this were a surgical rescue, there’d be buildings. If this were “precision,” there’d be streets and walls and rooms left to search. What we see is scorched-earth doctrine in a trapped civilian environment — destruction so total it denies the very possibility of return. That is not a counterterror policy. That is a removal policy.

This is not security. It is supremacy.
This is not defense. It is domination.

The law is not vague about this

I won’t drown you in citations, but here are the core rules the world pretends not to know — each one customary and binding:

• Distinction & Proportionality: Attacks must distinguish civilians and civilian objects; expected civilian harm cannot be excessive relative to a concrete military advantage (customary IHL; Additional Protocol I arts. 51–57).

• Indiscriminate/Area Bombardment: Prohibited, especially in densely populated areas (AP I art. 51(4)–(5)).

• Starvation/Siege as a Method of Warfare: Prohibited; destroying objects indispensable to civilian survival is unlawful (AP I art. 54; Rome Statute art. 8(2)(b)(xxv)).

• Destruction Not Justified by Military Necessity: Forcible transfer and widespread destruction of property are grave breaches (Fourth Geneva Convention art. 49 & 53; Rome Statute art. 7(1)(d)).

Flattening an entire city — a refugee camp at that — fails every one of these tests.

Remember what Jabalia was

Jabalia is not an empty coordinate. It is the largest refugee camp in Gaza, born of the 1948 expulsions, crowded with families from villages they were never allowed to return to. UNRWA schools, produce markets, mosques, clinics, generational homes, lives measured by the harvest and the school term. People who escorted their kids to class in the morning and haggled over tomatoes by afternoon. History lived there.

And now your screen shows a gray ocean of broken concrete.

So you feel the scale: imagine this in America

Don’t picture “a hard-hit neighborhood.” Picture Hartford, CT — all of it. Picture Ann Arbor, MI, Lafayette, LA, Billings, MT — not the west side, not a downtown corridor — the entire city — flattened into anonymity. No landmarks, no streets to recognize, no address to go home to. That is what “Jabalia is gone” means.

Those cities are the size of Jabalia. Does it make more sense now?

If this happened in any U.S. city, we would not call it “a strike.” We would call it a national annihilation event. It would, far and away, the single most catastrophic thing to happen in the modern history of the United States.

Name the policy: ethnic cleansing

People argue over definitions to avoid responsibility. The pattern is not complicated: make life unlivable, destroy the housing stock, starve the population, bomb the infrastructure, and then say, “There’s nothing left. They must move.” That is the forcible transfer of a protected population. That is ethnic cleansing, carried out with modern munitions and shrugged away with modern PR.

This is a crime, not a policy dispute.

What accountability requires

Independent investigators with forensic access to strike logs, target folders, and munition debris. Satellite chronologies of destruction. Names of commanders who signed off on area bombardment. Arms embargoes when states persist in grave breaches. Courtrooms that understand “military necessity” is not a magic word. And a world willing to say: a city is not a legitimate target.
