A Suquamish man I met explained to me that in the Pacific Northwest there were thousands of tribes, some no larger than family groups, each with their own dialect of the larger language. Part of the silencing is reflected in this post of yours Shaun - there is so much loss of culture in individual expression, as well as entire family lines, in genocide.
