The Arrest — And the Charge
Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Sabo, 43, an Israeli-born rabbi and former IDF soldier serving in Dallas, was arrested by Dallas police and charged with felony indecency with a child (with contact), according to local coverage and jail records. Bond: $100,000. Sabo served as Director of Jewish Life at Akiba Yavneh Academy (AYA) and, since 2022, as spiritual leader of North Dallas’ Tiferet Israel congregation. Both institutions have placed him on unpaid administrative leave, barred him from campus and official activities, and say they are cooperating with authorities.
AYA says an allegation was first reported to the school on Thursday, March 27. The school immediately suspended Sabo, notified law enforcement and child protective services, and began an internal investigation overseen by its board with two outside attorneys (including a former federal prosecutor). A subsequent message to families identified Sabo and said additional families had come forward with “shocking and serious” concerns. Dallas police have told school officials that the current investigation does not involve students or staff in the Early Childhood or Lower Schoolprograms.
Tiferet Israel’s executive committee held an emergency meeting, placed Sabo on unpaid leave, prohibited him from synagogue premises, and said he would perform no duties while the synagogue sought more information.
What the Affidavit Says
FOX 4, citing a police affidavit, reports allegations that Sabo frequently pulled down the pants of a male student and touched his genitals during the student’s 9th through 12th-grade years. The affidavit further alleges Sabo looked at the student while he was naked in the shower and gave him so-called “massages.” AYA’s Chief Academic Officer, Raymie Venable, said, “Our primary focus right now is to ensure the safety and well-being of all of the students, families and staff… with special care for the brave students and families who have come forward.”
The Public Figure Behind the Headline
Sabo is not an obscure local figure. In October–November 2023, he appeared in media segments and onstage at pro-Israel events promoting claims—presented without evidence—that Hamas committed mass rapes on October 7. Those claims were widely amplified in Western media and politics; yet by March 2024, a United Nations investigation stated it was unable to verify allegations of mass rape by Palestinian fighters on October 7.
That context matters. When a cleric with a public platform helps shape moral narratives around sexual violence—narratives used to justify a war—allegations that he committed a sexual offense against a minor demand both legal scrutiny and ethical reflection from the institutions that platformed him.
Objection & Answer
Objection: “These are only allegations—why cover this?”
Answer: Because a rabbi and school leader entrusted with children’s safety has been arrested and charged with a felony, barred by both his school and synagogue, and is the subject of police and internal investigations. Reporting precisely, with the presumption of innocence intact, is what responsible journalism requires.
Objection: “Is this piling on because of his politics?”
Answer: The charge and the duty of care stand on their own. But when a public figure invoked sexual-violence narratives in national media, the public interest in consistency and accountability is obvious.
Objection: “This will harm the community.”
Answer: The first harm is to the alleged victim and any others who may come forward. Transparency and due process protect communities. Silence does not.
What Accountability Looks Like
Accountability means full cooperation with law enforcement and child-protection authorities; clear, proactive support to any affected families; transparent updates from AYA and Tiferet Israel as investigations proceed; and independent safeguarding reviews across institutions that platform clergy and youth leaders. It also means media outlets and organizations that amplified unverified atrocity claims should examine their own standards. If you invoked sexual violence to move the public but go quiet when real charges land close to home, that’s not morality. That’s selective outrage.
We can hold two truths at once: Sabo is presumed innocent in court, and the rest of us have a moral obligation to protect children, listen to families, and demand transparent process from every institution involved.
