For Palestinians on the ground, recognition doesn’t stop genocide or deliver bread. But it reframes Israel’s actions as an invasion of a sovereign state.
I'd truly love to hear your thoughts on this one. If you read my full article, how do you now see an announcement like this? As always, feel free to push back.
Australia, UK, Israel and US strongly objected the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa. He we are decades again and the same countries are involved in oppression. What is repeating itself ad well is the disunity amongst them that saw each country slowly breaking away from this coalition. Do I believe they've grown a conscience? Absolutely not! Their reasons are multiple, one which you've mentioned is the reputation and pride of their citizens...but more specifically is their fear of civil unrest or a coup. They are only doing it to save themselves and not because they care about the Palestinians or whether Israel would completely annihilate it. On top of that the shaky economy of the US is creating panic in the face of BRICS countries moving towards a multipolar world. Their autocratic hold the US has on the world is under threat and we're seeing them run for cover. Recognizing a Palestinian state would also appease the locals while they secretly continue their covert handshake. We've seen this movie play itself out once to often in South Africa and what the world believe is the toppling of apartheid is just colour change of the face that runs the country, but behind all of it is still the same globalist colonizers
'But for Palestinians themselves? The truth is more painful. Recognition does not stop a single missile. It does not stop famine. It does not allow a single truck of food or medicine into Gaza. It does not free Palestinian hostages from military jails.'
Very true, Shaun, it's a step forward and indicative of the tide turning more and more against what Israel is and what it's doing. But by the time the world recognises the State of Palestine there will be nothing left to recognise. This recognition of a destroyed states and a people completely massacred will then just stand testament to the great lie that lives at the heart of the liberal order.
For us: All rules can always be broken and none ever apply.
For you: No rules can ever be broken and all apply always.
The Rules-Based Order is among the greatest deceits in history. My new piece goes into this actually and my theory of megaloliberalism.
We need the US to finally do something for anything of meaning to change, to save Gaza and to stop the monstrosity that is Zionist Israel. Until then, it's mostly just words, and Gazans, more than most any people we can imagine, need actions.
As a citizen of the United Kingdom I can only see this as a cynical fig leaf to mollify those who are not really paying attention to the true nature of what is happening in Gaza and the occupied territories. Only when I see that our government has stopped providing Israel with the support that it has for the past 719 days and imposes punitive sanctions in every arena will I believe that this is anything other than window dressing.
Very well said Shaun. I agree that this is a positive symbolic gesture, and furthers the isolation of the US and genocidal occupiers on the world stage, but sadly the daily reality for the people of Palestine being slaughtered and starved doesn't change. Decisive action like sanctions and intervention are needed to end this atrocity. It seems to me like something the UN is supposed to be there for, but sadly just like with Srebrenica in the 1990s, they are ineffective and offer nothing but empty words. Perhaps as more countries recognize the statehood, this will lead to the pressure needed to get the US to stop enabling the genocide and stop this? Only time will tell.
I think you’re right. It’s a step in the right direction and it should come with severe sanctions on Israel. These countries should stop arming Israel and demand that Israel ends the slaughter and starvation immediately. Also, if the UN General Assembly does not do something concrete to demand an end to this Genocide now or enact the Uniting for Peace resolution, then this recognition will not have served its purpose.

Without action, simply empty words.

Recognition comes with obligations. Let's see who is serious about keeping those obligations.
Where are the rescue boats. Its all talk, no action.
