The Minneapolis Church Shooting

Two days ago, a young white man — who identified as trans — opened fire outside of a Catholic church in Minneapolis. This disgusting coward shot and killed 2 kids who were literally praying in the church and injured 17 others before killing himself.

People fled for their lives. Families were terrorized. It was one of those moments that should have stopped the country cold.

But I’ve noticed a trend - conservative white people seem to primarily care about mass shootings only if they are done by someone other than a white man. When this shooting happened, I immediately saw people blaming Muslims, and then when they saw it was a white man, they just stopped tweeting about it.

The Reality: It’s White Men

Here’s the truth: most mass shooters in this country are white men. Period.

And yet, every new policy from the Trump administration has been aimed not at stopping the demographic actually committing the crimes, but at demonizing Black and Brown people, Muslims, immigrants, and refugees.

The facts are simple:

• White men are consistently the majority of mass shooters.

• Somewhere between 81%–86% of all white people killed in America are killed by other white people.

• White-on-white violence dwarfs anything Trump or Fox News ever talks about.

And yet, instead of addressing this reality, we get racist dog whistles, Muslim bans, immigrant scapegoating, and “law and order” crackdowns on Black communities.

Ignoring the 86%

Think about that statistic. 86% of white people killed in America are killed by other white people.

You would think, if Trump truly cared about public safety, his administration would focus on that. That’s the overwhelming majority of white homicides. That’s the overwhelming majority of mass shooters.

But no. They ignore the 86% and focus all their energy on the 14%.

Why? Because the 14% are people of color, immigrants, Muslims. And targeting those groups is politically useful. It fires up a racist base. It stokes fear. It wins elections.

Selective Outrage

This is why the Minneapolis church shooting will quietly fade from the news cycle. Because the shooter doesn’t fit the narrative. He wasn’t a Black man. He wasn’t Muslim. He wasn’t an undocumented immigrant.

He was a white man. And America is perfectly fine ignoring white male violence.

White people, in general, seem content to turn away from the fact that the overwhelming majority of victims of white violence are white people themselves.

It’s a national blindness. A willful blindness.

What It Really Means

The policies coming out of Washington aren’t about safety. They aren’t about protecting families. They’re about power.

And nothing proves that more clearly than this: when white men are the ones overwhelmingly pulling the triggers in America’s mass shootings, but the government targets everyone but them, you know the system isn’t built for justice. It’s built for politics.
