Alex de Waal’s Grim Warning: Thousands of Children Can No Longer Digest Food
In a chilling interview with Alex de Waal, one of the world’s leading famine experts, he revealed a staggering truth: thousands of Palestinian children in Gaza have been starved to the point where their bodies are no longer capable of digesting food. This isn’t just about malnutrition—it’s about irreversible damage to their bodies, a life sentence of suffering, and the horrifying consequences of war and genocide.
De Waal stated, “There are an increasing number of children—probably in the thousands—that need to be in the hospital because they can’t eat food. They have got to that stage of severe acute malnutrition where their bodies just can’t digest food.” The situation is so severe, it has reached the point where even food alone won’t be enough to save these children. They need immediate, intensive care to survive, but the resources are already overwhelmed, and death rates continue to rise.
The Unthinkable: Starvation as a Weapon
As Alex de Waal points out, starvation as a weapon of war is not a new tactic, but it has become commonplace in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Netanyahu’s military strategy isn’t just about bombing cities—it’s about starving an entire population into submission. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have used siege tactics to ensure that food, water, and medical supplies are kept out of Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and accelerating the death toll.
The Geneva Conventions clearly prohibit the starvation of civilians as a means of warfare, but Israel’s actions are flouting international law with impunity. As De Waal describes, “in order to starve the five per cent, basically, everyone else has to starve first.” That’s exactly what is happening in Gaza right now. Children, the elderly, the sick, and the innocent are all dying in large numbers—not from direct violence, but from systematic deprivation of basic necessities.
The Broken Humanitarian System: Aid Is Not Enough
As much as the international community is flooding the zone with humanitarian aid, it may be too little, too late. The U.N. system, which was once able to provide some level of assistance, has been hobbled by Israel’s constant obstruction. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has taken over aid distribution, but it’s become clear that looting, mismanagement, and violence have disrupted the flow of aid. And the aid that does get through isn’t reaching the people who need it the most.
De Waal notes that “the U.N. has no sense of what is even going to get across the border on a given day.” Even if the U.N. had more resources, the physical and political barriers set up by Israel make it almost impossible to deliver aid in a coordinated manner.
The Legal and Moral Failure of the International Community
The failure of the international community to step in and act is an injustice of its own. Countries like the United States continue to support Israel’s actions, vetoing any U.N. resolution that calls for a ceasefire or humanitarian intervention. Meanwhile, Israel’s allies continue to arm and fund the occupying force, enabling the genocide to unfold.
Humanitarian law prohibits the targeting of civilians and the denial of food and aid to a population under siege. But instead of holding Israel accountable, the international community has allowed these atrocities to continue, with only lip service to justice.
A Call for Immediate Action
The time for diplomatic discussions and “waiting for the right moment” has passed. Thousands of Palestinian children are dying, not from bombs or bullets, but from the deliberate denial of food. International law is being violated right in front of us, and we cannot stay silent.
It’s time for the global community to demand accountability for Israel’s actions in Gaza. The world must stop shielding Israel from prosecution and demand justice for Palestinians.
If we stand for anything, it must be the right to life—and the right to dignity, for all people, regardless of nationality or faith.
