To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
To be Black in 2020 is to epitomize the principle of Kujichagulia. We name ourselves Black and queer, Black and trans, Black and educated, Black and father, Black and mother, Black and resilient, Black and alive. 21st-century Blackness is void of identity limits, smashing social constructs en route to maximum liberation.
Black folks occupied city streets all across America in the thick of a pandemic to advocate for our personhood. We did not wait for the news to tell our story, we scripted it in fire, with marching feet and a rallying cry for justice.
We made America say our names and call us by our rightful titles: citizen, human.
