Unity: Umoja (oo–MO–jah)
To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
Black folks from all walks of life, socio-economic backgrounds, orientations and zip codes embodied the principle of Umoja amid the 2020 summer of uprising. Protests were often multi-generational as a collective voice called for the eradication of systemic racism, a reimagination of American policing and a declaration of Black value.
Much has been said about the “awakening” many white allies had in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. Though there is something to be said about increased solidarity on behalf of some white Americans, there is a deeper unification worth acknowledging when considering the diversity of Black voices that rose in unison to say “enough is enough.”
