In These Tweets is a weekly cultural dive into trending topics on Twitter. A collection of snapshot analyses on a variety of moments impacting our world. Sometimes serious, sometimes light, always. We outchea, #InTheseTweets.
BIG NEWS: #InTheseTweets will soon be on video, available to The North Star audience! In the coming weeks, you will get to see my unimpressive face give commentary on tweets of cultural, sociopolitical relevance to us. I’m ready if y’all are!
Bree Newsome Bass is a beacon of Black sociopolitical gospel and articulates my sentiments on the state of America about 99% of the time. She recently tweeted an honest and thorough thread about the crippling effect of the two-party system of American politics and the Democrats’ tendency to try being logical with a raging Republican Party.
“Good morning. We do not need to unify with the Republicans. Please kill that talking point. Why would we revive a political party that first tried to prevent a free & fair election from occurring & now seeks to overthrow the results in a fascist coup?” Newsome-Bass tweeted, which is counter to the “across-the-aisle” rationale line of thinking by President-elect, Joe Biden.
Establishment Republicans recognize that Donald Trump’s refusal to concede his presidential loss to Biden is against the tradition of how a transfer of power should work. They just don’t give a shit and are willing to die on the hill of Trump’s fraud conspiracy theories and sociopathic behavior.
Obviously, the Democrats are still at the table trying to play cards while the Republicans are running away from the house they set on fire.
Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump recently provided an update on the city of Kenosha’s ordinance regarding its police officers wearing body cameras.
“Kenosha County Board last week failed to approve the purchase of body cams for sheriff’s deputies, a clear violation of a 2017 local ordinance requiring they wear body cams. How many more residents must end up like #JacobBlake before local leaders commit to safety & transparency?” Crump tweeted.
Kenosha became the epicenter in the fight for police accountability and against state-sanctioned violence when Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, was shot multiple times by Kenosha police in late August.
Crump’s last question is what Black folks in America are literally at risk of dying to know.
Once upon a time, HUD Secretary Ben Carson was a highly-respected and nationally renowned neurosurgeon. There was a movie inspired by his work in the medical field and everything.
In 2016, Dr. Carson ran an unsuccessful bid to be the Republican presidential nominee and was eventually offered a cabinet position by Donald Trump to be in charge of a department that he had zero expertise in.
Apparently, Carson’s time out of the medical field has warped his knowledge of science, or his loyalty in walking heel-to-toe with his boss has fried his good sense. He recently contracted the coronavirus behind doing the type of shit that scientists and doctors have explicitly warned the public about.
How you gonna be a whole ass licensed physician, retired or not, and go to an election night party for a candidate who did not win re-election, unmasked?
Ok, so usually I never include any of my own tweets #InTheseTweets, but this one gained a little traction across the Twitterverse and is worth reiterating. This election season was grueling and a reckoning for America. It was an indictment of American values.
Folks all over the nation who wanted a Biden win are feeling a mixed bag of emotions in response to his victory, and I just wanted to say that it is perfectly normal for us to celebrate Trump’s removal and still be very concerned about what the Biden/Harris administration holds for us, especially minority voters.
Time will tell, and the nuance of the moment calls for a deeper reflection than just a victory over Trumpism. But also…
Get the fuck, Trump!
