How to Reach Your Senators to Demand They Vote on the Stimulus Bill and Fix the Chaos in the USPS

The North Star has dropped its paywall during this COVID-19 crisis so that pertinent information and analysis is available to everyone during this time. This is only possible because of the generous support of our members. We rely on these funds to pay our staff to continue to provide high-quality content. If you are able to support, we invite you to do so here.

Despite mounting evidence that the Trump administration is wreaking havoc in the USPS and a failure to reach a stimulus deal, Congress adjourned last week for its annual recess. While the House has been recalled back, there are little signs that the Senate will do the same.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced on August 16 that she would call the House back into session to vote on legislation that would block any changes to the Postal Service. The Democratic-led House was not scheduled to return to vote until September 14, but it could now vote on a Postal Service bill as soon as August 22, according to The New York Times

“Lives, livelihoods and the life of our American democracy are under threat from the president,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to Democratic lawmakers. “That is why I am calling upon the House to return to session later this week.”

Meanwhile, the Republican-led Senate has no plans to return before the end of its summer recess, though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is under bipartisan pressure to do so. According to CNBC, McConnell signaled that if a deal on the coronavirus stimulus bill was reached during the recess, the Senate would be recalled to vote. However, he did not demonstrate any concerns over the Postal Service.

Where the Stimulus Bill Stands

Weeks after negotiations ended without a second stimulus bill for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, each party put forth a stimulus plan but were unable to hash out a compromise bill. Their inability to do so means the American people will be left weeks without relief, including eviction moratoriums, stimulus checks, unemployment insurance, help with their student loans and more.

Following Congress’ failure to act, President Donald Trump signed executive orders meant to address several aspects of the stimulus bill. One of the president’s executive orders called for $300 additional federal benefits for some workers, up to $400 depending on the state’s ability to contribute. However, it could take weeks for the order to go into effect. The president also ordered the Department of Education to continue deferring federal student loan payments through the end of 2020, CNBC reported.

What’s Going on With the Postal Service?

The Postal Service has been under attack for several weeks, and many are afraid it could severely affect the general elections in November.

In July, the Postal Service warned several states that it may not be able to meet their deadlines to deliver last-minute mail-in-ballots for the election, The New York Times reported. Thomas J. Marshall, the general counsel of the Postal Service, said that voters in 45 states are at risk of not having their mail-in-ballots postmarked by Election Day or received by the election board on time given their state’s laws.

Postmaster general Louis DeJoy ordered some “cost cutting” measures, including ending overtime pay and the removal or transfer of some sorting machines, according to The Times. The changes and the Postal Service’s July notice prompted Democrats to call on top Postal Service officials to testify before Congress.
