The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) said on Monday, March 2 that a third person inside of a Mississippi state prison has died. There have been 22 deaths inside of Mississippi state prisons since December 29. The staggering deaths are part of an ongoing prison crisis in the state.

With the conditions being described as similar to the third world it is not surprising that the number of deaths is at that level. I am a health care provider and have worked in the prison system. I believe stressful living conditions, poor medical care, substandard nutrition and hopeless are factors contributing to the deaths. It is apparent that this system is overwhelmed, most likely funding is inadequate and the rights of these prisoners are being violated. This prison administration and the Missippi State Government needs to be held accountable for the condition of this prison.
