Criminal Charges Dropped Against ‘Empire’ Actor Jussie Smollett, Angering Authorities

Chicago prosecutors on Tuesday suddenly dropped all charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who had been accused of allegedly setting up a fake hate crime against himself and filing a counterfeit police report. The announcement comes after the actor was indicted earlier this month on 16 counts of disorderly conduct by a Cook County grand jury. The actor appeared at an emergency court hearing on Tuesday morning, as the case was being dropped provided that Smollett agreed to forfeit his $10,000 release bond,

  1. I appreciate this article for it’s purpose: describing the recent events of Jussie Smollett’s case. BUT I wished this article could include the murky history of the Chicago Police, the detectives on Smollett’s case having some biases which affects how they would pursue this case, and how the detective released information to the public during an open investigation.
I guess I wanted more information about the context of the Chicago Police because I felt like this case was poorly handled and this topic could be explored more. Personally, I believe Jussie Smollett; I believe that two brother actors are a complete fabrication from the Chicago Police. No one is reporting fake reporting hate crimes, just the same as no one is fake reporting rape. This is not a commonplace lie. Plus, Smollett just didn’t have the right motive to do such an act. It wouldn’t have benefited him in anyway. Something was off about this case and I wish this article was able to direct me why I felt this way.

  2. I really don’t know where to stand here, but I can definitely say that the Chicago attorneys are acting weird. If they have enough to convict Smollett of some of the crimes, why wouldn’t they go for it? The spotlight that Smollett brings would make Chicago look great even if only a few of the crimes stick. And if they don’t have enough for a conviction but really do think he’s guilty, why wouldn’t they bring the case to trial if only to get justice in the court of people’s opinion? You destroy Smollett’s career even if he’s found innocent because of insufficient evidence, and Chicago looks good for at least trying, appeasing the public at large.
Instead, they chose to get a quick cash payment and bury everything, leaving me with only two choices left. They really do believe they had something on Smollett and they really screwed up somewhere with the evidence so they bargained with him to save face, or they don’t have anything and traded money to stop the smear.
Another point of contention here, is that if Smollett was lying, his attorney Patricia Brown Holmes wouldn’t make the same mistake by then repeating the lie when she said to “focus on the two brothers the actor said attacked him”. If Smollett was lying, his attorney is putting her career on the line for nothing, which makes me think that Smollett wasn’t lying in the first place.

    1. Technically his attorney is in trouble if he told her it was all a lie and she went along with it. If he is telling her the same story he told the cops she is none the wiser and obligated to defend her client and no one will disbar her for that. Mob lawyers do the same exact thing without getting their careers jeopardized and we KNOW their clients lie all the time.
