The acting director of homeland security, Chad Wolf, recently released an annual assessment of violent threats to America, according to a report from The Guardian. He wrote about being “particularly concerned about white supremacist violent extremists who have been exceptionally lethal in their abhorrent, targeted attacks in recent years.”

The following is a poem about the pride America has always taken in violent white masculinity. It is a foundational terror that ebbs and flows, but is always available to do this country’s bidding.

America Has Always Been Proud of Its Boys’ Ability to Terrorize

They always smiled for the pictures
always called friends and family
and all the townsfolk they could muster
to gather around the spectacle
white violence is a favored American sport
and the crowd has always gone wild…
always cheered with a full voice
whenever a non-white body
went limp

With every new evolution of sport
the equipment grew more sophisticated
the whip begat the noose
the noose begat the rifle
the rifle begat the Billy club
begat the bomb
begat the never-ending fire

White supremacy begat the chaos
created the rules of engagement
that afforded whiteness permanent
home field advantage
but somehow
acts surprised
when its boys rage with
the type of toxicity that
leaves the stadium in ashes

America has always been the home
of Proud Boys
has always provided the nurturing
and kerosene and
infrastructure to
(em)power its sons to victory

Whiteness has always been
their winning strategy and those boys are just following
the playbook laid out for them.
